Teaching Language with the Help of Music

Standard Three

The teacher understands how students differ in their approaches to learning and creates instructional opportunities that are adapted to diverse learners.

Adapting Instruction for Individual Needs Artifact 1

Name of Artifact: Observation
Date: Spring 2003
Course: FL 692 (Independent Project)
Rationale:

As an independent research project I tutored a high school student who was having trouble in math.  Math has always been my worst subject, so finding ways to help her with her homework was often a challenge.  She told me that the kind of math that she did in her native country was very different than the math they were doing in her high school in the U.S.

After several meetings, I discovered that she was not familiar with the vocabulary her teacher used to solve problems.  She knew words like "multiply" and "fraction" but not words such as "times" and "plus."  Although the math may have been different, the real problem is that she lacked a knowledge of the working math terms used by her teacher and classmates.

I designed some activities to give her opportunities to practice using practical math-related vocabulary.  After working extensively with the vocabulary, her test scores dramatically improved.  She went back to her home country shortly thereafter.

In this tutoring experience I experimented with several different techniques before I found one that best worked for this particular student.  I learned here that each student learns differently.  This student, I found over time, learns best by doing.  Allowing her to teach me math, using words from our list of vocabulary, seemingly helped her to develop linguistic confidence.

Adapting Instruction for Individual Needs Artifact 2

Name of Artifact: Song for Children: "All New Eyes"
Date: May 2003
Course: LIS 591 (Storytelling)
Rationale:

In the course on Storytelling that I took last Spring, we practiced using a variety of methods to teach children primarily.  In a final project, we were to present a children's book of our choice and a variety of activities that could be used with it in the classroom.

My partner and I chose The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry.  This book tells the story of a man who was sent to chop down a large tree in an Amazon rainforest.  Just before he begins to chop, he takes a nap under the tree.  While he's sleeping all of the animals that depend on the tree for shelter come before his sleeping body and beg him not to cut down their home.  Miraculously, when he awakes he has a change of heart and decides not to cut down the tree.

To accompany the storyline of the book I wrote a song with lyrics that can easily be sung by children.  The song is ideal for young children learning English as a second language because it has them repeat words and animal sounds.  The lyrics and chorus are also fairly repetetive and easy to follow.

In the presentation, I gave a copy of the lyrics to all of the students in the class and asked them to sing along.  They didn't seem to have any problems following.  In fact they sounded great!
